First Degree Burns

Share

First Degree Burns is an Epic Alumni-written and performed play centered on three friends who are navigating radically different post-secondary trajectories while wrestling with the burden of carrying family dreams on their backs. The play utilizes interviews with students, administrators, and counselors to theatricalize authentic emotional experiences, comically skewer college bureaucracy, and challenge the notion that institutional inertia is immutable. The personal journeys of the ensemble reflect the story: one third of the cast completed college, one third have stopped out, and one third have never attended.

Each 2-hour Performance/Workshop features a performance of “First Degree Burns,” a talk- back with the cast, and a 1-hour interactive workshop using Augusto Boal’s Forum Theatre techniques to establish “Shared Commitments” between students and adult policymakers that will help transform their institution.
