From the Producers of No Child..., Hannah and Martin, and Beauty on the Vine, Epic Theatre Ensemble (formerly Epic Theatre Center) is thrilled to present the New York Premiere of A HARD HEART by acclaimed British playwright, Howard Barker (Scenes from an Execution, The Castle).

Written in 1991, long before 9/11, the Patriot Act, the new Pope, and the current immigration debate, A Hard Heart is a prophetic and electrifying exploration of the ways we protect our political and human borders when feeling under siege. This chilling tale about sacrifice and seduction in the face of war is directed by Will Pomerantz (Dai, Great Expectations) and features celebrated actor and activist Kathleen Chalfant (Angels in America, Wit).

A Hard Heart

Because night is here but the barbarians have not come. And some people arrived from the borders, and said that there are no longer any barbarians.

And now what shall become of us without any barbarians? They were, those people, a kind of solution.
- Waiting for the Barbarians
Constantine P. Cavafy (1904)
